awesome slow JO elected as top design watch

In the latest edition of inspirational magazine OOOM one of the world’s most influential designer – Stefan Sagmeister (Sagmeister & Walsh, New York) – elects slow Jo 21 as one of his TOP 3 design watches.

HOW AWESOME IS THAT?! He is fascinated by our 24 hour one-hand concept and the unique experience of wearing a slow watch.

article about slow Jo design watch

“With only one hand, its slower motion and the second glance you always take at it, it creates a unique experience and the function of the watch is still useful. Well done.”

We are especially honoured by this as we have always been big fans of Stefan who takes a truly slow approach himself: Every seven years he is closing his studio for one entire year. He using this sabbatical to rejuvenate and refresh their creative outlook. We love that idea!

10 REASONS WHY THE SLOW WATCH IS TRULY SLOW

Wednesday, March 9th, 2016

In a nutshell: Why is the slow watch truly slow?
We know you all totally get the slow concept, but there are so many different aspects of how we translated the idea of slow to a watch that you might not have thought of all of them yet. Here are 10 good reasons why Jo, Mo and O are simply the best reminder to help you guys to be slow!

1. THE CORE IS THE UNIQUE SLOW 24 HOUR ONE-HAND CONCEPT.

2. AS THE HAND TURNS ONLY ONCE EVERY 24 HOURS INSTEAD OF EVERY 12 HOURS IT MOVES AT HALF THE SPEED OF A NORMAL WATCH.

3. AS THERE IS NO MINUTE HAND THE WATCH ENSURES THAT YOU ARE NOT STRESSING OUT BY CHASING THE MINUTES.

4. EVEN IF YOU CAN READ THE TIME +- 1-2 MINUTES PRECISELY, IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU AN UNNECESSARILY PRECISE INDICATION OF TIME WHICH IS CERTAINLY RELAXING.

5. THE HAND FOLLOWS THE MOVEMENT OF THE SUN: IT RAISES “ON THE LEFT” AT AROUND 6:00, REACHES IT ZENITH AT 12:00 AND SETS “ON THE RIGHT” AT AROUND 18:00.

6. SHOWING THE TIME WITH ONLY ONE HAND AND ALL 24 HOURS IS A MUCH MORE NATURAL WAY OF READING THE TIME. IT IS TOTALLY INTUITIVEAND YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALCULATE HOURS AND MINUTES.

7. ACTUALLY, IT IS THE ORIGINAL WAY OF SHOWING THE TIME. IF YOU LOOK AT SOME REALLY OLD TOWER CLOCKS YOU CAN STILL SEE THAT THEY ALSO HAVE ONLY ONE HAND AND 24 HOURS.

8. 24 HOURS IS THE RHYTHM OF NATURE DEFINED BY THE SUN. THERE IS NOTHING NATURAL IN LIFE THAT HAS 12 HOURS OR 60 MINUTES. THE ONLY NATURAL CYCLE -APART FROM THE MONTH AND YEAR- IS ONE FULL DAY.

9. THE 24 HOUR ONE-HAND CONCEPT ALSO HELPS YOU TO RECONNECT WITH THE YOUR SENSE AND CONSCIOUSNESS FOR TIME.

10. AS READING THE TIME IS DIFFERENT TO A USUAL WATCH, IT HELPS YOUR BRAIN TO BE FLEXIBLE AND CHANGE BEHAVIOUR PATTERNS. IF YOU ARE FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE SLOW WATCH, YOUR BRAIN MAYBE IS JUST A LITTLE BIT RUSTY 😉

Now that you know why a slow watch is truly slow. If you think you should be slow as well, click here for an overview of all slow watches

SLOW IN SCANDAL

Monday, October 12th, 2015

When you work as professional crisis management consultants – like Jake (played by Scott Foley) in the TV-Show SCANDAL- it’s of course even more important to stay slow. There is no better way to do so than by wearing a slow watch. See how great the watch is looking at his wrist right here!

SLOW AND VIN + OMI AT THE LONDON FASHION WEEK

Friday, September 25th, 2015

It was time for slow Jo to dare the move on the big catwalks of this world. Therefore we were happy that our friends from VIN+OMI took him on board for their super inspiring show at theLondon Fashion Week. And he just did great!

Also Vin and Omi themselves were totally excited to work with slow Jo. That’s what they think about slow:
“For our next collection during London Fashion Week, we were looking for a watch that would fit our theme. It had to be forward looking, an excellent design, and be something cool, arty, people would be wearing in the future. This collection is all about looking forward and slow was the perfect fit. We love the way slow changes the way we think about time and it fits with our ethos of challenging how people think about fashion.”

SAY HELLO TO THE O!

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

We can’t tell you how excited we are! Today, we are finally introducing an entirely new model. That’s biiig news for a brand that is as focussed as slow! If you want to be 100% true to your brand, there is not much you can do without diluting the great things you already have. Everything needs to be meaningful and has to add to the story.

Therefore it took us a lot of time thinking of a way to even further enhance our concept of a watch as a reminder to be slow. After many sleepless nights, some bottles of wine and a good portion of help by mother nature we finally had the perfect inspiration for the new design: It should be as perfectly rounded and smooth as the stones carved by the water in the ocean or rivers.

Of course these stones, which are often used by zen Buddhists are already slow in itself. But when you wear and touch the watch you will feel that its flow and softness makes your slow O the ideal timepiece to remind you to stop chasing the minutes.

Needless to mention that technically it was challenging for our engineers to bring this design alive. But these guys are smart as hell and in the end they found a clever constructions – like the rounded fully integrated case back, top loading assembly and bombe glass – to manufacture this amazing watch case! Holding it in our hands for the first time just made us all smile 🙂
But not only the case is incredible. We also put some extra emphasis on the dial. Every single number as well as the round hour indexes have been set separately on the decently structured surface. It creates a beautiful floating effect and gives a lot of depth to the piece.

Enough talking now! Just take a look yourself; slow O actually does not need a lot of words! Check the entire line up right here.

A SNEAK PREVIEW ON SLOW O

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015

After establishing such an iconic shape for the case of slow Jo and slow Mo we felt it is time to add a new face to the brand. Not the easiest task to find a design concept that truly embodies the values and idea of slow. For slow Jo and Mo the perfect symmetry represents the balance we are aiming for in life. But adding a meaningful case shape for a new model was a huge challenge and took quite some time…

Then, one day while we took a walk on the beach, we picked up stones to skip across the water. Suddenly, we paused and realized just how amazing the stones feel from being carved by the water over millions of years. They lay so perfectly smooth in your hand and you just want to touch them all the time.

And there it was. Our inspiration and mission for the next slow watch: Wouldn’t it be super slow to create a watch case that is as rounded as these stones made by mother nature!?

And that’s just what we did. You will love the results. It does not only look fantastic but it will be the most comforting watch you will ever wear and its smoothness will always remind you to stay in the flow.

We can’t wait to finally release it to you very soon!

EAT THIS DYSCALCULIA!

Monday, July 20th, 2015

As you guys know one of the key elements of slow is the 24 hour one hand concept. The unique way of showing the time by leaving out all unnecessary hands and displaying all hours of the day on the dial. This is a much more natural way to show the time as the hand follows the natural movement of the sun through out the day.

BUT NOW we just learned that even scientifically our concept is more intuitive than the standard 12h clock!

Our friend Janina (you see her and slow Jo on the pic below) has dyscalculia.

To be honest, we never heard of this before…. Basically it is what dyslexia is for words but for numbers. Even more confused now? So this means basically that people with this condition are usually really smart (e.g. Janina studies at the European school of design) but they are not able to calculate numbers. Often to such an extend that they can’t read a normal clock, as this also requires mathematical logic.

And here comes the unbelievable, amazing thing: Janina can actually read the slow watch perfectly fine! As it follows a natural “logic” and does not artificially divide the day into 2 halves and hours into minutes. So slow Jo was the first watch in her life she could manage to read!

We are super excited that the slow watch can actually help people with dyscalculia to read the time on a watch again. HOW AWESOME IS THIS!?!

Apart from that we found Janina super slow as – due to her condition – she simply sees things with different eyes than most people. Where others see a problem she visualised the solution right away as she is not distracted by logical numbers. Just pure creativity 🙂

Thanks soooooo much to Janina for sharing this great story with us and inspiring us.

And Dyscalculia – EAT THIS!

BEING AN ONLINE BRAND AND COMPANY IS AWESOME… BUT!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

We are in direct contact to you guys – with nobody in between. ALL OVER THE WORLD! So you literarily talk directly to the founders of slow and get to know our ideas of what slow is in the purest and most undiluted way. Also we can keep the company structure very lean and efficient so we can still offer slow watches at a great price point.

But of course you guys often ask us where you can actually experience the brand in the REAL world. And guess what!? We just partnered up with some good friends to showcase slow in selected stores!! So you finally also can see the slow world in the real world!

Haha, how fun this is and actually a great “distraction” for us to get away from the laptop and get our hands dirty to build up nice presences “offline”.

Like when setting up the shop in Barcelona this week!! Look at this!!

Doesn’t slow look just AWESOME!?

Pass by if you have a chance: Relojerias Condal, Carrer Comtal 20, 08002 Barcelona.

Cheeeeeeers!!!

EVEN MR. SLOW HIMSELF – CARL HONORÉ – IS A TRUE FAN OF SLOW!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

Of course slow always takes a very light-hearted approach and we never take us too serious. But despite all the fun, there is a deep story behind the brand and the watch is a symbol that truly helps people to be slow.

We are super proud that even Carl Honoré – probably the most known slow expert and author of many slow books such as THE SLOW FIX – is a big admirer and of course wearer of slow watches.

Here is what he thinks about slow:

“People are fed up with stuff that is made, consumed and discarded quickly. Increasingly we yearn for things that are built with love, craftsmanship and artisanal attention to detail. We crave objects with a story behind them and to which we can add our own story over time.

The notion that “the medium is the message” also applies to time pieces. In other words, the device we use to tell time can affect our relationship with time itself. Telling time on a cheap, disposable watch, or on a smartphone, reinforces the view that time is a commodity or a resource to be exploited. When we tell time using a beautiful handmade object, we are reminded that time is a precious gift. A gift to be savoured and shared.

As the go-to guy on the Slow Movement, I love my Slow Watch. Removing the minute and second hands is a stroke of genius. It makes it harder to hear time’s winged chariot hurrying near and turns wearing a watch into a philosophical declaration. It’s like saying, “I understand the true value of time. I will not rush through my life; I will not count the minutes and the seconds; I will live them.”

So guys! Follow the words of this wise man and become slow!
